• SmartCane in Bahrain

    The rotary club of Manama presented 100 SmartCanes to the members of the Friendship society for the Blind in a ceremony at the society's premises in Riffa. A group of society members received the canes at the presentation which coincided with World Sight Day. "Life is not the same anymore since I started using the SmartCane. It is like a less dark then how it was before" said Ms.Khudair . Khudair , who is among those who received the first set of 25 canes would be training the new set of users on the SmartCane which she says changed her life. The club community director said the members were enthusiastic about the project. The club distributed 25 SmartCanes in April 2017 and the overwhelming response from the users inspired members to want to donate more. On behalf of entire SmartCane, would like to express our sincere gratitude towards Rotary Team for taking this wonderful initiative of providing SmartCane devices to the members of the society.

    • SmartCane distribution camp in Himachal Pradesh

      Venue: Nagrota, Himachal Pradesh

      For the 4th consecutive year, a SmartCane distribution camp was organized in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh on 26th and 27th July 2017. This event was held during the annual health camp, which is organized by Nagrota Bhawan Welfare Society under the leadership of Shri. G.S Bali, Honorable Minister of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, and Transport, Technical Education and Vocational and Industrial Trainingin the state. 25 persons with visual impairment from different districts of the state, most of who included school children, were provided SmartCanes and comprehensive training to enable them to use it effectively. Some of the visually challenged individuals who had received the SmartCanes during previous camps also participated in the training workshop and assisted the team in conducting training for the beneficiaries

      • Successful completion of Workshop on "Use of Digital Content for Braille and Tactile Graphics Production in Braille Presses of India"

        A three day workshop on the "USE OF DIGITAL CONTENT FOR BRAILLE AND TACTILE GRAPHICS PRODUCTION IN BRAILLE PRESSES OF INDIA" was organized jointly by National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (Divyangjan) and DAISY consortium in collaboration with Centre of Excellence in Tactile Graphics, IIT Delhi.         • 2nd Training Workshop on "Design and Production of Perceivable and Affordable Tactile Diagrams.

          Venue: IIT Delhi

          A training workshop on "Design and Production of Perceivable and Affordable Tactile Diagrams" was organized by the Centre of Excellence in Tactile Graphics (COETG).he objective of the intensive three- day workshop was to provide hands on experience to the tactile designers, special educators and transcribers in designing and producing tactile diagrams from the printed or digital graphics.Many special educators, teachers and students associated with various organisations participated in the workshop. Many students who are studying in mainstream schools also attended the workshop, where they learned about various softwares that are used in making science and mathematics content e.g., writing equations, accessible.           • Launch of SmartCane in Ethiopia

            Venue: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

            An Awareness and training workshop on Safe and Independent mobility was organized in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by Bahiru Abbas Advertising Ltd.The organizers of the workshop created a lot of awareness about the utilities and benefits of the SmartCane device for the visually impaired community through a radio show on assistive technology aired on dotcom radio.A joint team of trainers from IIT Delhi and Saksham participated in the event.               A joint team from IIT Delhi and Saksham participated in Africa forum held in Uganda,More than 400 people from 56 countries participated in the event. These included large number of representatives from organizations working for the people with blindness, special educators, advocates, policy makers and persons with visual impairment. SmartCane device was exhibited during the techshare Africa exhibition and there was huge interest to understand the functionality and utility of the device. Large number of participants learnt the device usage and many purchased the device to improve their mobility.                   The event was attended by people from various institutions, including faculty and alumni of IIT Madras, members from leading organisations working with visually challenged people in the region and media personnel.the event was given by Dr. R V Ramani, Founder and Director of Sankar Eye Care Foundation.SmartCanes were also distributed to 35 visually challenged end users.A training was also conducted for the organisations working for persons with visual impairment who attended the event, including National Association for the Blind (NAB), National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), Netrodaya and Karna Vidya.                   • Workshop at St.Stephen's College:Workshop on safe independent mobility and lerning through tactile graphics.

                    Venue: New Delhi

                    An awareness cum training workshop on SmartCane and tactile graphics was organized on 3rd of February at St. Stephen’s college during Drishtikone, which is an annual event organized by the college for students with visual impairment.Attended by visually challenged students from various colleges of Delhi University.Efforts are currently being made to provide SmartCanes under our subsidy scheme to those participants who are unable to directly purchase this device.

                    • Smartcane International Outreach:SmartCane Awareness Session in Thailand, Visit to the Christian Foundation for the Blind and the Bangkok School for the Blind,Thailand

                      The SmartCane team conducted awareness session on Smartcane at the Christian Foundation for the Blind and the Bangkok School for the Blind in Thailand. Over 10 organizations were present in these sessions who expressed interest in introducing this device in their region. Currently 5 Smartcanes have been left with them to receive feedback on the benefits of this device in the local area.

                        A joint team of IIT Delhi and Saksham participated in the annual conference of World Blind Union (WBU) held at Hong Cong between 20 -24 November 2014. With over 400 people present at the conference, the team engaged with organizations and individuals from various geographical locations to discuss the benefits of SmartCane. the team received an extremely positive response from most of the participants who eagerly await the introduction of this mobility aid in their regions.

                              It was really encouraging for the team to observe these users navigating around on their own with the SmartCane device without any need of further training.                                 Smart cane device training workshop was organized with the mobility instructors and the visually impaired trainees at NIVH Chennai. The workshop was conducted by Supriya Das from Saksham Trust with the assistance of two scholars Ankit and Pulkit from IIT Delhi.

                                  A workshop was conducted by Supriya Das form Saksham Trust on Assistive Technologies for the visually impaired in Avinashalingam University for Women. The prime discussion was on the electronic mobility aid Smart cane and knowledge sharing of tactile graphics.Nearly 50 candidates which included faculty members from the department of special education, visually impaired students, research scholars and parents of the visually impaired.
