SMARTCANE TRAINING WORKSHOPS

SmartCane Launch in South Africa
1-7 March 2017
A national campaign was organized to launch the SmartCane in multiple cities of South Africa including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Worcester, Durban and Peitmaritzburg in the first week of March 2017, in collaboration with Disability Management Services (DMS), the International partner organization of Saksham in South Africa.

Team members from SmartCaneTM team and DMS conducted series of Awareness and training workshops at the following organizations: College of Orientation and Mobility (SA guide dog Association), Blind SA, Cape TownSociety for the Blind, Pioneer School, KZN society for Deaf and Blind, University of Kwazulu Natal and International Arabic School for the Blind. Very large number of persons with blindness as well as O&M experts and community workers pro-actively participated in the workshops. Participants were keen and enthusiastic to procure the devices and improve their safety and independence during day-to-day mobility.

Team members also met the key stakeholders from Government, organizations and user groups to figure out pathways for providing SmartCaneTM devices in highly affordable manner along with the quality training. SmartCaneTM is now available in South Africa through Disability Management Services. DMS in turn working with multiple organizations to make devices available through them along with quality training for the convenience and benefits of the persons with blindness.
SmartCane Launch in Bahrain
21 January 2017
Rotary Club of Manama, Bahrain took the initiative of improving the mobility of persons with blindness in Bahrain with SmartCane device. Understanding the importance of safe and independent mobility, Rotary tea coordinated with the Friendship Society for the Blind to organize a distribution cum training workshop on 21st January 2017. During the workshop, 20 SmartCane devices were donated to the members of the society. All the beneficiaries along with a group of trainers from different organizations working for the blind in Bahrain were trained in the using the SmartCane device for day to day mobility. Master trainer Mr.Piyush Chanana from SmartCane team visited Bahrain to conduct the training.

The workshop was an outcome of incredible efforts of Ms. Pauline Jeakings (International Services Director) and Ms. Roaya Badeer (Community Services Director) who also played a vital role of translating the training instructions in Arabic.

Looking at the positive response and the request from the Society, Mr. Al Fareed (President) encouraged the fellow rotarians to donate more SmartCane devices. Within few minutes, he raised donations for 120 SmartCane devices which will be provided to members of the friendship society in near future along with the training.

The Rotary Club of Manama and the Rotary Club of Adliya are also supporting the Rotary Club of Pune Central through Global Grant to provide SmartCane devices to young women in India.

Campaign on safe and independent mobility in Gujarat
December 2016
In the month of December 2016, a large scale training campaign on safe and independent mobility was held in Gujarat where more than 800 visually challenged end users, mobility instructers and special educators received training on fundamental mobility techniques and navigating in different settings with the help of a modern travel aid like SmartCane. Participants from 6 key organisations across the cities of Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Vadodara, Surat and Anand attended the trainings. SmartCanes have already been made available to A large number of the participants through Samajik Adhikarita Camps Organized by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and presided over by Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and after going through an in-depth training, they have now gained the confidence to effectively use this device to travel safely.
SmartCane training workshop in NAB Uttarakhand

On 16th October 2016, a training workshop on safe and independent mobility was held with 80 secondary school and college students and 10 trainers of National Association for the Blind (NAB) Uttarakhand located in Haldwani district of the state. As part of this workshop, the participants were first provided an in-depth understanding of the fundamental orientation and mobility techniques, after which they were explained about how to detect obstacles and navigate safely in various settings using a SmartCane device. The participants were also introduced to various other assistive devices for education and independent living. The workshop received a highly positive response from the participants, and the organisation has decided to raise funds to ensure that maximum number of students can get access to SmartCane.

On 17th September 2016, more than 1000 visually challenged individuals received SmartCanes from PM Narendra Modi as part of the largest ever distribution camp for aids and assistive devices, that was organised in Navsari district of Gujarat. On 27th and 28th August 2016, a workshop on safe independent mobility was organized with 40 visually challenged female college students in Pune who were provided SmartCane devices, along with the detailed training on its usage for traveling safely by avoiding various types of obstacles. The event is 2nd in a series of workshops which is being organized as a part of the initiative taken by rotary Club of Pune to identify visually challenged individuals having high mobility needs and equip them with SmartCane devices in collaboration with different local organisations in the city. Earlier a group of 35 girls from Jagriti school for the Blind were provided the device through the support of Rotary club in the month of May. The next workshop in this series is being planned to provide the devices to some of the other students of Pune University.

On 30th July 2016, a user cum trainers’ training workshop on safe and independent mobility with SmartCane was organized in Delhi for 60 students and teachers of Patiala School for the Blind. At the end of this workshop, 32 students who performed extremely well during the training, were provided SmartCanes with the support of MetLife.

For the third consecutive year, SmartCaneTM devices were distributed to more than 50 persons with visual impairment from different districts of Himachal Pradesh during the health camp held on 26th and 27th July 2016. This event is organized every year in Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) by Nagrota Bhawan Welfare Society under the leadership of Shri. G.S Bali, Honorable Minister of Transport, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Education in Himachal Pradesh Cabinet. Most of the beneficiaries who received the device were school children. They were extremely happy to be the part of the event and actively participated in the SmartCaneTM training workshop as well as the cultural programme organized during the event. The training was imparted by the team of trainers from Saksham and IIT, along with the support of student volunteers from Dronacharya College of Nursing.

On 22nd July 2016, a training workshop on SmartCane was organized at Atam Jyoti Blind Girls School located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. 61 visually challenged girls studying in class 8th and above as well as in different colleges of the city participated in this workshop. The event was also attended by 9 special educators and mobility trainers. This training received a highly positive response from the school, which has joined our network of resource partners, and has agreed to raise funds for making SmartCane devices available for its students.

Jagriti School for the Blind, Pune organized a summer camp for nearly 50 girls with visual impairment. Understanding that the independent travel is one of the most important requirement for the seeking education and work, the project director Ms. Sakina Bedi took the initiative of organising one day workshop on Safe and Independent Mobility for all the camp participants. In the workshop, participants were taught the fundamentals of cane mobility and were given detailed training on using SmartCane device for travelling safely by avoiding collisions with various types of obstacles. Believing in the potential of the technology and the positive impact it can have on the mobility of persons with visual impairment, the school is working closely with the Rotarian Mr. Anil Bora to raise funds for providing SmartCane devices to more than 100 female students studying in the school.

The workshop was primarily attended by students and young professionals, majority of who were also equipped with SmartCane after they were given an in-depth training of navigating with the device.

On 16th March 2016, a training workshop on safe independent mobility and assistive technologies was organized at Netrahin Seva Sangh in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, which is a prominent not for profit organisation working for the persons with visual impairment in the region. Around 135 participants attended this workshop, who mainly included future special educators, and school students . After a comprehensive training on navigating safely and independently in various settings with SmartCane, the participants were also sensitized about other modern assistive technologies for education and independent living.

On 1st March 2016, a workshop on safe independent mobility was held at Blind Welfare Association in Amrawati, Maharashtra. The workshop was attended by more than 50 participants, who consisted of special educators, school students and women pursuing vocational courses at the organisation. At the end of the workshop, four participants were provided SmartCanes through the donations given by some of the regular funders of the organisation who were also present during this event.

A workshop on safe and independent mobility with SmartCane was organized at Indore in Madhya Pradesh on 31st January 2016. The workshop was held in collaboration with Yuva Viklang Manch, and was attended by more than 60 participants, who mainly comprised of young professionals. Members from several organisations across various cities of MP such as Betul, Chindwada, Khandwa, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Bhopal and Guna also participated in this workshop.

Assistive technologies workshop in Patiala
17th October 2015
On 17th October 2015, an awareness and training workshop was held at Society For the Welfare Of The Handicapped(Patiala School for Blind), which is a residential school for the students who are visually challenged and deaf blind. A total of 35 participants attended this workshop. After a comprehensive training on navigating safely and independently with SmartCane, the participants were also sensitized about several other assistive technologies being developed and disseminated by IIT and Saksham. After the workshop, the organisation has joined the network of dissemination partners, which will pave the way for facilitating access to assistive devices for addressing the mobility and other key developmental needs of the students and people with visual impairment associated with it.
Trainer's Training Workshop at Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences
15th October 2015
On 15th Octobert, Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences invited the SmartCane team for conducting a trainers training workshop for their faculty members and students from various under- graduation and post- graduation programmes. All the participants were excited to learn about the SmartCane technology and were curious to understand how much it is beneficial for the visually impaired community. The workshop was attended by 99 participants, including special educators of the department and the students from several departments. After the completion of SmartCane training module, participants were introduced to other modern assistive technology solutions and tactile diagrams. The feedback was very positive and the participants were committed to train visually impaired students in using SmartCane for day to day mobility in future.

15th October 2015
On 15th October 2015, an awareness and training workshop on SmartCane and other assistive technologies for persons with visual impairment was held at Government Senior Secondary School for Blind Boys in , Ajmer, Rajasthan. A total of 65 participants attended this workshop, which included the teachers and all the senior students of 9th to 12th standard.
Training on safe independent mobility in Sri Ganganagar
6th October 2015
A training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was organized at Jagdamba Andh Vidyalaya in Sri Ganga Nagar, Rajasthan on 6th October 2015. The workshop was attended by more than 80 participants, including students doing diploma in special education, along with some visually challenged students studying in school. The workshop received highly enthusiastic response from the participants. After getting an in-depth understanding about the different methodologies which can prove instrumental in enhancing the mobility of visually challenged person with the help of a modern travel aid like SmartCane, the students pursuing special education were also provided a hands-on experience of training the persons with visual impairment in using this device. Discussions are currently ongoing with Jagdamba Andh Vidyalaya to develop mechanisms for ensuring access of SmartCane and other modern assistive devices for persons with visual impairment in their region.

In the month of September , several awareness and training workshops on safe independent mobility with SmartCane and other assistive devices for persons with visual impairment were held with the students from special schools, colleges of Delhi University, with future special educators and mobility trainers in Delhi. These workshops were attended by more than 150 participants, who were trained on the usage of SmartCane for navigating safely and independently, and were also sensitized about other assistive devices for education and independent living.

14th - 15th September 2015
A series of user and trainer training workshops on safe independent mobility with SmartCane were conducted in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh On 14th and 15th September 2015 in collaboration with Rehabilitation Society for Visually Impaired (RSVI), the dissemination partner for SmartCane in the region. These workshops witnessed the participation of more than 150 people, including school students, future special educators and faculty members of the institutions offering courses on special education. 4th September 2015 at Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education, New Delhi
On 4th September 2015, a training workshop on assistive technologies was organized in collaboration with Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education. The workshop was attended by around 35 students pursuing Bachelors in Special Education at the college. The event received highly enthusiastic response from the participants who were trained and sensitized about SmartCane, and various other assistive technologies and products being promoted and developed by IIT Delhi and Saksham.

3rd September 2015
An awareness and training workshop on assistive technologies was held at Technical Training Institute of Pune Blind Men’s Association on 3rd September 2015. Around 60 students and 10 faculty members of the institute participated in the session, wherein they were provided a comprehensive training on using SmartCane and other assistive devices being disseminated by Saksham for persons with visual impairment. The event was received very positively, and the organisation has begun to make efforts for ensuring access to assistive devices in their region by exploring the possibilities to conduct similar awareness workshops in nearby rural areas and making devices available to the beneficiaries under Government of India’s ADIP programme.
Smartcane showcased during the exhibition organized by NCERT
2nd September 2015
On 2nd September 2015, the assistive devices for persons with visual impairment being disseminated by Saksham were showcased during an exhibition organized by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on the occasion of their 55th foundation day. These devices were exhibited under NCERT’s Department of Education of Groups with Special Needs. SmartCane device received appreciation as an innovative technology from a large number of people attending the exhibition, including the Hon’ble Minister of HRD, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani who was the guest of honour at this event.

On 12th August 2015, a workshop on safe and independent mobility was organized by IAB in collaboration with Association for rights of visually challenged. More than 50 participants, including Special educators, college students and members from various organisations working with the persons with the visual impairment in the region attended this workshop. The team is thankful to the trainers of IAB for facilitating this workshop and contributing to the mission of enhancing the outreach of this modern mobility aid among persons with visual impairment.
Awareness Workshop at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Coimbatore

On 11th August 2015, an awareness and training workshop on safe independent mobility and other assistive technology solutions was organized with the members of department of Disability Management and Special Education, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University in Coimbatore. The workshop was attended by students with visual impairment, their family members, and the staff members of the department. As part of this workshop, the participants were first provided an in-depth understanding about navigating with SmartCane in a safe and independent manner, after which they were sensitized about various other assistive technologies, such as the Refreshable Braille Display, daisy players, calculators, etc. The participants were also provided an orientation about the different methods of preparing tactile diagrams and their usage for understanding various concepts.
SmartCane training and dissemination in Himachal Pradesh
26th July 2015 - 27th July 2015 at Nagrota Welfare Society, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh
A state level training on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was organized with the support of Nagrota Welfare Society on the occasion of health and bal mela in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. The training was held on 26th and 27th July, and was attended by around 50 participants from 10 districts of the state. After receiving hands-on training of navigating in different social settings with the help of SmartCane, the participants were also provided with the devices, which were donated by the society. The event witnessed enthusiastic response from the participants, some of who even volunteered to become master trainers and took a separate training from the team for this purpose. The team is also thankful to students of Dronacharya College of Nursing for their valuable assistance in conducting the training, and to Nagrota Welfare Society which under the leadership of Mr. G. S. Bali Honourable minister of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Transport, Technical Education, Vocational & Industrial Training) has proposed to make it an annual event that would pave the way for enhancing the access of this modern mobility aid to maximum number of visually challenged people in the region.

A training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was held on 27 July 2015 for the Assessment officers of Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), a leading public sector manufacturing company of artificial limbs and rehabilitation aids under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The training was provided to a group of 25 assessment officers, who are responsible for assessing the technology needs of persons who have physical disabilities, and allocating them the different assistive devices accordingly.
SmartCane Training and Distribution at Ahmadi School in Aligarh

On 28 May 2015, a training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was held with the students and teachers of Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, which has been established under Aligarh Muslim University. The workshop was inaugurated by the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University Brigadier (Retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali, and was attended by around 50 participants. During the workshop, 25 students were also provided SmartCane through the support of Dr. Shahid Jameel and Mr. Shirshendu Mukherjee from Welcome Trust. Efforts are ongoing to make Smartcanes available to all the students of the school.
SmartCane Awareness Session with employees of Northern Railways

On 25 May 2015, an awareness session on SmartCane was conducted as part of a workshop on disability carried out by Northern railways for their employees. The workshop was attended by over 50 people. After sensitizing the participants about the usage and functionality of SmartCane, information was also provided about various other assistive technologies being promoted and disseminated by Saksham, such as Daisy players, screen readers, among others.

On 21 May 2015, a training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was conducted in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The workshop was attended by around 30 participants who consisted of graduate students pursuing soft skills training at Indian Association for the Blind (IAB), as well as the trainers from both IAB and Aravind Eye Hospital.

On 20 May 2015, a training workshop on SmartCane was conducted with special educators, mobility trainers and school teachers in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, as part of our endeavour to develop an expert group of trainers who could further sensitise and train the visually challenged end users to use this device in an effective manner in their day to day mobility. The training was organized in collaboration with Chakshumathi, and was attended by around 10 participants.

An awareness cum user training workshop on SmartCane was conducted during a science camp for the visually challenged students of Kerala. The camp was organized at Thiruvananthapuram by Chakshumathi, a prominent organisation working for the empowerment of visually challenged and one of our channel partner for dissemination of SmartCane in the state. The workshop was attended by 15 students who were studying between 8th-10th standard. After training and demonstration of SmartCane, the participants were also provided hands on experience of various other assistive technologies being developed by IIT Delhi and Saksham, such as the tactile graphics, bus identification system, Braille tutor, etc.

A training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was carried out on 18th May in Kolkata, West Bengal. This workshop was conducted as a part of a trainers’ training programme carried out by Enable India for enhancing vocational and other developmental skills of persons with visual impairment. More than 25 trainers from several states of India participated in the workshop. As part of this workshop, the participants were provided an in-depth understanding about the various training methodologies that can be instrumental in enhancing the mobility for visually challenged persons with the support of an assistive technology like SmartCane.
SmartCane Training in Srilanka

A series of training workshops on SmartCane were conducted in Srilanka between 23- 24 March 2015. These workshops were attended by trainers and members from some of the leading organisations working for the empowerment of persons with visual impairment in the country, including Sri Lanka National Federation of the Visually Handicapped, DAISY Lanka Foundation and SriLanka Council For the Blind. These workshops are an important step in achieving our mission of ensuring safe and independent mobility for maximum number of visually challenged, through access of this noble mobility aid in not only India but globally as well.
SmartCane training conducted for beneficiaries of ADIP programme

A training on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was held for a group of 20 visually challenged end users, who have received the devices under ADIP programme, which is Government of India’s flagship scheme for providing assistive devices to persons with disabilities with low income. This training was held on 21 March 2015 at National Association for the Blind (NAB) Delhi.
Workshop on safe independent mobility at SRVC
5th March 2015, IIT Delhi
on 5 March 2015, a training workshop on safe independent mobility was conducted at Society for Rehabilitation of the Visually Challenged (SRVC) in Kochi. this training was organized as part of the skill development programme carried out by the organization, which focuses on providing career oriented training to the young visually challenge persons for making them socially and economically self reliant. The workshop was attended by a total of 30 participants, including 5 trainers and 25 visually challenged students enrolled in the skill training programme. Since mobility is a prerequisite for persons with visual impairment for leading an independent and dignified life, the training on safe independent mobility with SmartCane has been integrated with this programme.

3rd March 2015, IIT Delhi
On 3 March 2014, a user cum trainer training workshop on safe independent mobility was conducted at Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) in Kottayam. The workshop was attended by a total of 36 participants, including 6 trainers and 30 visually challenged persons associated with the organization. The participants were provided training on methodologies of safe independent mobility, including practical hands-on experience of navigating with SmartCane in different settings.
SmartCane training workshop with members of AICFB
1st March 2015, IIT Delhi
A training workshop on safe independent mobility with SmartCane was held at Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu during a national level chess tournament for persons with visual impairment conducted by all India Chess Federation for the Blind between 1st and 2nd March. The workshop was attended by a total of 60 participants, including the chess players participating in the tournament, their family members and trainers of AICFB. As part of this workshop, 4 SmartCanes were also provided to the meritorious players with established mobility need.
SmartCane Training Workshop at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University
3rd February 2015, IIT Delhi
An awareness cum training workshop on SmartCane and tactile graphics was organized on 3rd of February at St. Stephen’s college during Drishtikone, which is an annual event organized by the college for students with visual impairment. The workshop was attended by visually challenged students from various colleges of Delhi University. Significant contribution to the workshop was also made by student volunteers of St. Stephen’s who assisted in conducting this activity. Efforts are currently being made to provide SmartCanes under our subsidy scheme to those participants who are unable to directly purchase this device.

Training on safe independent mobility at Score Foundation
3rd December 2014, IIT Delhi
On 3 December 2014, a workshop on safe independent mobility was carried out at Score Foundation, which is an organization working towards inclusion and empowerment of persons with visual impairment. The workshop was organized as part of the annual skill development programme carried out by the organization for providing career oriented training to the young visually impaired persons, and making them socially and economically self reliant. As part of this workshop, the participants were provided an in-depth understanding of fundamental concepts of mobility and navigating in different social settings with the help of SmartCane. The workshop received a highly positive response and discussions are ongoing to incorporate it in the training curriculum of the organization, as well as to provide SmartCane devices to the participants in an affordable manner.
Awareness and Trainers’ cum Users’ Training Workshops
29th November 2014, IIT Delhi
A team from IIT Delhi and Saksham Trust visited National Federation for the Blind, Guwahati on 13th and 14th September, 2014. NFB Guwahati has joined as a channel partner in SmartCane dissemination for making SmartCanes available in the eastern states of our country. An Awareness Workshop has been organised on 13th September, attended by nearly 50 persons followed by a Trainers’ cum User Training Workshop was also conducted on 14th September. Trainers of NFB along with seven beneficiaries who received the SmartCane device through the National donation pool attended the workshop.
SmartCane training workshop in Kolkata
20th November 2014, IIT Delhi
On 20 November 2014, a user cum trainer training workshop was organized at Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys Academy, Kolkata. The workshop was attended by nearly 60 participants, who included mobility trainers, future special educators and visually impaired students from Blind Boys Academy. At first, a group of prospective trainers were trained on the methodologies of safe independent mobility, followed by a practical hands-on exercise wherein they successfully trained the students in mobility with SmartCane under the supervision of the master trainers. After completion of this training, many students showed interest in obtaining the device for their day to day use and mentioned lack of purchasing power. Efforts are being made to raise donations from local philanthropic organizations to ensure that the technologies reach the deserving candidates.
Awareness Session in Kurukshetra University
27th October 2014, IIT Delhi
On 27 October 2014, the Smartcane team conducted an awareness session at the Department of Special Education in Kurukshetra University. The session included future special educators, users and staff members who were very keen to know about the enhanced mobility due to the device. With over 20 participants, the team discussed various aspects of mobility and SmartCane. Special thanks to Professor Sushama Verma for her guidance throughout the session.

A special awareness cum training workshop was held in Jamia Milia Islamia University. Amongst the attendees were the B. Ed and M. Ed class, Faculty of Teachers’ Training and Education, and students with visual impairment. Thirty two future special educators were trained at the workshop. Moreover, One SmartCane device was given to Gajendra Kumar Yadav, a Jamia student, in the lieu of Urdu translation service by students for the trainers handbook.

SmartCane Trainers' cum Users' Training Workshop

National Association for Blind, Raipur added as a new channel partner for SmartCane dissemination in and around the state of Chhattisgarh. NAB trainers were trained to impart SmartCane training during a training session organised at IIT Delhi on 20th June 2014.

Team from IIT Delhi and Saksham visited Blind Welfare Council in Dahod (Gujarat) on 19.06.2014 and trained 5 trainers and 4 users in using the SmartCane device. Blind Welfare Council, Dahod has joined as a channel partner and is committed to make SmartCane available to the people in Dahod as well as the surrounding regions, for promoting Safe and Independent mobility.
