We at ASSISTECH with our user-centric approach aim to develop products for visually impaired which are affordable and easy to use. While seven of them are sponsored while others are in their early stages and at present are lab prototypes are being used for feedback

TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN TACTILE GRAPHICS
Tactile Graphics create a representation of visual images using embossed line, textures and braille labels. it cam greatly enhance teaching and learning of spatial and geometrical concepts. Applications include creation of accessible diagrams for class IX/X maths and science textbooks and diagrams explaining functionality included in training resources for assistive technologies.

Accessible Tactile Graphics
Edutactile
Edutactile is a cross-platform Java-based software which facilitates the creation of tactile graphics specialized for scientificfic and mathematical content. It automatically handles layout and formatting thus relieving special educators and enabling them to concentrate on the content of the diagrams. During the development, feedback was taken from special educators as well as visually impaired students. Initial feedback has been positive regarding both the software as well as the quality of diagrams produced using it.

SMART CANE

Cane mounted obstacle detection system
The ‘smart’ cane is an affordable obstacle detection system that is mounted on the white cane carried by the visually challenged. The system detects obstacles above knee height, within a range of 3 meters and conveys distance information through varying vibratory patterns.

OnBoard

Bus Identification and homing system
Visually impaired persons depend heavily on public buses for commuting. However, at a bus stop the person hears buses approaching but cannot identify the route number. Our system allows the user to identify the route number of buses approaching a bus stop. Further, the system allows the user to select the bus of interest and navigate towards the entry by triggering auditory cues from the bus.

Refreshable Braille Display
Refreshable Braille Display (RBD) is a device that enables people with visually impairment to read digital text through tactile interface. Textual content in Portable Document Format (PDF), word documents etc. can be read using the display without having to emboss/print on braille paper. Affordable display gives them access to diverse textual media and opens doors for development of various products that shall strongly empower them in fields of education, employment and quality-of-life.

INALSI

Indoor Navigation with Access to Location Specific Information
INALSI is an Indoor Navigation System designed in a manner so as to support multiple Localization techniques in a seamless manner and cater to the visually impaired as well as the sighted users. INALSI allows the user to enter places of interest like public buildings, in universities, in shopping areas and malls, in cinema complexes, in large exhibitions and museums, in fairs, in food courts as well as in airports or railway stations and then guides the user towards the destination via audio directions from a cell phone.

Indoor NAvigation System Device
SCREEN READERS

NVDA Screen Reading Software
Screen Reading Software interpret information displayed on a screen, converting to audio via text-to-speech engines. The group is engaged in development on an open source screen reading software called NVDA. The immediate objective is to provide full compatibility with MS office and key application software packages for promotion of employment opportunities. The long term objective is to support Indian Languages.
